I am Overdue: How can I Induce Labour

There are lots of old wive’s tales about inducing a pregnancy. These are not medical procedures, far from it, but are tricks that women have used over the years to help naturally bring upon labour when a woman is overdue.

It is generally regarded that only chemical induction is appropriate but if you try and talk honestly with your medical provider, they may suggest a few little tricks that can prevent a synthetic induction. In most countries they talk about 40 weeks being the correct gestation period, but in France, they consider full term to be 41 weeks and in fact, most first babies are born at 41 weeks and one day.

They is much turmoil in the obstetric community with regards to induction and many people believe that unless the baby is in danger, then he or she should be left to make an appearance naturally. However, if you are almost two weeks overdue, the hospital staff may suggest that you go onto an induction list and if babe does not appear they will artificially induce you.

There is research that suggests that acupuncture or acupressure will help bring on labour if your body is ready. Ask your health practitioner if they know of any practitioners in your area that deal specifically with prenatal health and women’s health. Do not see any acupuncture practitioner who is not trained in this area. The practitioner will let you know how many treatments they think you will need, but if you are quite overdue, they will likely suggest a few regular sessions.
